For thousands of years, people all over the world have been cultivating and utilizing the hemp plant and the unique benefits and uses it brings. With all that it has to offer, it’s really no wonder that its popularity never subsided throughout the years. Thankfully, as we’re turning towards more sustainable and ethical resources, we’re reminded just how valuable this special plant is.
Though it’s been found to be helpful in myriad different ways, we’ve compiled five of the top ways that hemp, right now, is changing the world as we know it.

1. Using Hemp to Replace Cotton

In the past, clothing made out of hemp was not only popular, but it was commonplace. As time progressed, cotton became king, and hemp was slowly pushed out of the picture. Fortunately, we are seeing a revival in utilizing hemp to craft more absorbent, durable, and environmentally-friendly fabric.

Unlike cotton, hemp requires very little water to grow, and the amount of hemp that can be grown in one place compared to cotton is three times larger. The two simply do not compare in terms of sustainability.

2. Hemp Can Be Used as an Alternative Fuel Source

Now more than ever, our planet is in need of an alternative fuel source that will not continue to harm our environment. Though biodiesel is a good option, it’s usually derived from food crops, which can directly impact our food source. Hemp biofuel, on the other hand, is a fuel derived from hemp plants only. Because hemp is fairly easy to grow, doesn’t require pesticides, and can be cultivated within a matter of months, utilizing this plant as an alternative fuel source could completely change the future of our planet in the best ways possible.

3. Hemp Is Biodegradable

The hemp plant has one of the world’s most versatile fibers, making it fit to craft practically anything. From clothing, as we talked about, to building materials, beauty products and everything in between, hemp can be used for it all.

Not to mention, hemp and hemp products are completely biodegradable, so there’s no guilt when you’re done using it.

4. Hemp Can Help Build Homes and Buildings

Another huge way hemp is changing the world is through the use of hempcrete. Hempcrete is a biocomposite material that can be used for constructing homes and commercial buildings. This material is environmentally-friendly and non-toxic, mold-resistant, fire-resistant and holds internal temperatures incredibly well. If crafting our homes with this ethical building material became more common, our planet would benefit magnanimously.

5. Overall Hemp Has Great Sustainability

In general, hemp is an incredibly sustainable crop that can do our planet a whole lot of good. The amount of hemp we can grow ethically is significant, and the crop can convert CO2 into oxygen much more than the typical tree. While trees take years to grow and mature, hemp plants can be ready for cultivation in months. All of these factors and more lead many to believe that hemp could be a leading contender in the fight against deforestation and global warming.

The more that we embrace utilizing hemp, the smaller our carbon footprint becomes, and the better we can feel about our impact on the world.
